teeny tiny crab

Today the lovely and talented Hana successfully distracted me (if only temporarily) from my studies with a trip to the beach.  Say what you will about the potentially controversial "changing of the guard" at the Rockaways; it's still a bitchin' way to spend a hot summer afternoon.  Two fish tacos, iced coffees, iced teas, strawberry-lime italian ices, and one frozen chocolate-covered banana later we called it a day.

imagination and Old Growth

Over the weekend, Chad and I went on a Chelsea adventure.  We decided to be tourists in our city and behave as though we were vacationing abroad.  We made only loose plans and allowed ourselves time, flexibility and treats.

We started in Chelsea and visited the Andrea Rosen gallery which currently has on view the playfully haunting work of Matthew Ronay.  We also looked in on our dear friend Ann's show at ZieherSmith as well as Thorsten's show at IPCNY, from where we caught a glimpse of the newest stretch of the High Line.

The High Line is a truly amazing place and it was wonderful to rediscover it in this new segment.  Where else can one walk through New York without the worrisome punctuations of traffic and streetlights?  The act of walking continuously for 16 blocks made the trip seem so short and evermore enjoyable than on the street.  And did I mention the views?

We strolled through the neighborhoods we frequented while first becoming acquainted with this place and ducked down those strangely winding streets of the west village before making our way slowly back home.

traffic, fireflies

I arrived home last week to my first official evening of summer vacation with the relics of another year of school in toe; well-wishings from families with whom I've become close, bean plants grown by the children of the after-school science program, and perhaps the most beautiful flowers I have ever received.  I followed Chad into the back and watched as he made room for the new plants and tended our "crop".  The garden is really in full swing now, and we can’t believe the rate at which things are growing.

Later, while walking in the neighborhood, a lightning bug, flashing neon green, crossed my path on the sidewalk, and completed the palpable sensation that summer has arrived.
